failure, fury, faithfulness | spring 2022

The books of 1 and 2 Kings recount the tumultuous history of the line of kings who ruled over God’s people following the death of King David. 2 Kings jumps into the middle of the story, after Israel has split into a northern and southern kingdom. We have chosen the title; Failure, Fury, and Faithfulness to highlight the complex, redemptive drama that unfolds in this book. Though covenanted to lead God’s people with justice in the pursuit of God’s glory, most of the kings identified in this book compromise their own faith and thus drag God’s people into their idolatrous ways. This book is intense and often violent, displaying the truth that we rarely hold to our idols with open hands but with clinched fists. Nevertheless, the overarching testimony of this book is that despite all the failure and fury illustrated in 2 Kings, God’s faithfulness is the anchor of our hopes for a true and righteous King, that God’s promise to establish the throne of David forever has not be forsaken but will be fulfilled in King Jesus.
